The
Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) an institution of The Aga
Khan Development Network, is completing a major phase II expansion of
the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam in 2018. This expansion aims at
improving the Hospital’s quality of facilities and infrastructure to
become an ultramodern 170 bed facility in order to increase its capacity
as a provider of high-quality medical care leading to tertiary care,
referral and teaching hospital. The Phase II development is focusing on expanding key clinical services including a comprehensive cardiology programme, oncology services, and neurosciences, as well as the expansion of orthopedics and trauma, diagnostic imaging, critical care, and women and child health programmes. The Hospital is ISO and JCI Accredited (achieved a level of quality and patient service that is equal to the best hospitals in the world) and the teaching site for The Aga Khan University, which offers postgraduate medical education programs leading to Master’s of Medicine in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Surgery.

It is also an accredited internship site. As part of the integrated health systems approach, AKHST plans to establish 35 outreach health facilities that are located across Tanzania. Currently, 20 such clinics have been established across the country and linked the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.
We are seeking for enthusiastic and qualified experienced personnel for the following positions:
LABORATORY HISTOTECHNOLOGIST
JOB SUMMARY
Reporting to the lab manager, the Laboratory Histotechnologist will be responsible for overall operational and technical functions of their respective sections. They will facilitate in delivery of laboratory services in efficient and effective manner. Should play a key role in planning, implementation and supervision of Laboratory Quality Program while positively impacting the department in the journey towards accreditation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prioritizing work load, monitoring pending logs from LIMS and organizing section for well-coordinated performance so that tasks are complete within time frame.
- Ensure that IQC and maintenance of equipment are done
- daily and as and when required and documentation is complete. Responsible for maintaining internal/external quality control test and take appropriate CA/PA and document.
- Performing daily checks – temp charts, Benching cleaning and maintenance of waste disposal criteria.
- Preparation and implementation of technical SOP’S of their section and in day to day incidence reporting documenting in the logs available, checking and advising juniors on CAPA documentation.
- Supervision of technologists and lab assistants during their shift making sure to fill in gaps if workload increases in other section, demonstrate team player role.
- Actively participate in department CME and the teaching of students and technical staff from upcountry country, new technical staff employed by the Hospital.
- Keep control over their stock items in use and submit stock control report to lab manager.
- Be well versed with principles of patient and specimen identification, specimen separation, storage and archiving. Should be well versed with acceptance and rejection criteria. Filling specimen rejection forms and informing attending clinician or nurse in-charge.
- Performing of routine/specialized tests and recording the results in the LIMS and authenticating after proper validation and verification.
- Recording and reporting all critical results to the concerned clinician or Nurse in-charge following policy of reporting critical labs and documenting it.
- Monitoring pending tests as well as urgent tests with a thought of maintain TAT.
- Should escalate problems as well as potential problems to the lab Manager or HOD, making sure to document all incidences.
- Should report stock requirement to laboratory in-charge and document it in the stock register book with the indication of their respective expiry date.
- Follow standard operational procedures, Take part in Accreditation preparation actively.
- Responsible for the delegation of duties to lab scientists, technologists, lab assistants, clerks, attendants in conjunction with the lab manager.
- To perform any other duty that has been assigned by laboratory manager / laboratory management.
ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institute and registered with the laboratory Board.
- Bachelors in Medical Laboratory Sciences will be an added advantage.
- At least 2 years relevant work experience.
- Be familiar and experienced with the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), in terms of application and utilization.
- Experience in an international health setting is an asset.
- Well versed in the required discipline, the individual should also be a team player and demonstrate honesty and loyalty to the institution.
- Ability to work with diverse groups and commitment to advancing workplace diversity.
- Employ problem solving and decision making abilities to resolve challenges quickly and creatively through appropriate courses of action.
