Pyrethrum Commercial Farming Development Officer
Location: Iringa, Tanzania
PCT owns and operates a pyrethrum processing factory in Mafinga, Mufindi District, Iringa region, Tanzania; and is in the Pyrethrum business including pyrethrum farming and processing, in Tanzania and is a subsidiary of McLaughlin Gormley King Company (MGK), a leading global producer and marketer for Pyrethrum products. PCT is seeking to fill the position of Pyrethrum Commercial Farming Development Officer reporting to the Chief Operating Officer.

The primary purpose:
The primary purpose of this position is to support and develop emerging commercial farmers in to grow pyrethrum in accordance with best practices in growing, harvesting and drying pyrethrum in order to maximize yield and quality of pyrethrum and to offer training and support in farm administration activities.

Scope and Impact:
The pyrethrum commercial farming development officer will contribute to the development of the farming community by helping farmers to increase pyrethrum productivity in order to maximize income earned from pyrethrum production. The pyrethrum commercial farming development officer will ensure that he/she also scales up PCT programs to expand commercial pyrethrum farming, in the area. 

Essential Functions:
  • Recruit and develop new commercial pyrethrum farmers in Iringa region.
  • Provide professional agronomic and financial advice to commercial farmers.
  • Train farmers in record keeping and the development of farm plans and budgets.
  • Identify and develop areas with potential to grow pyrethrum and encourage commercial pyrethrum growing in those areas.
  • Assist farmers with input financing applications.               
  • Report to PCT management on areas of improvement for success of commercial farming.
  • Introduce productivity improving crop husbandry technologies and support farmers in the adoption of these technologies.
  • Collaborate with field extension staff, researchers and government institutions to improve commercial pyrethrum farming

Education:
  • Minimum Required: A Bachelor's degree holder in Agriculture Economics and Agribusiness from a recognized institution. Knowledge/experience in agronomy and/or crop husbandry is of added advantage.

Work Experience:
Minimum Required: At least 1 year experience working with small holder/commercial farmers on improved agricultural technologies. Age Not more than 30 years old
Must possess a clean driving license, and must be trained with the ability to safely ride a motorcycle, including in rural areas and on non-paved roads. Ready to work and live in remote areas as well as ready to work long hours and on emergency field cases. 

Skill
Specialized skills/Knowledge Needed for Performance of Job:
  • Superior customer service skills and a high level of discretion with confidential and sensitive information;
  • High level of diplomacy required with the ability to manage relationships in a positive manner;
  • Excellent knowledge of agronomy and agribusiness,
  • Critical thinker and fast learner and ability to help farmers, local leaders, and other stakeholders in the assigned area in their decision to join the commercial program;             
  • Able to troubleshoot problems, whilst also identifying issues which need to be escalated;
  • Exceptional work ethic and attention to detail;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including strong written and verbal communication with ability to articulate issues
  • Fluent in Kiswahili, with good command in English language to participate in meeting and communicate with supervisors
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel etc.)
