Overview
WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) Tanzania – the International Conservation Organization in alliance with TRAFFIC – the international wildlife trade monitoring network – is seeking an experienced researcher to lead activities under TRAFFIC’S Reducing Trade Threats to Africa’s Wild Species and Ecosystems – ReTTA.

Major functions:
Under the supervision of TRAFFIC’S Director of East Africa Office, the Research Manager will lead on undertaking rapid assessments of threatened terrestrial and marine species, involving extensive field research, market surveys and conducting interviews, as well as internet surveys and report and literature reviews. The Research Manager will also lead ongoing efforts to strengthen the tracking of timber and forest products in trade in Tanzania.

Major duties and responsibilities:
  1. Develops and implements research partnerships;
  1. Ensures adherence to TRAFFIC’S research and data management protocols;
  1. Ensures adherence to governments’ data collection and publication requirements;
  1. Ensures the technical quality and timely delivery of planned activities;
  1. Develops recommendations for actions to address illegal and unsustainable trade and encourage uptake within the region;
  1. Tracks and measures the impact of activities recommended by TRAFFIC;
  1. Ensures the successful implementation of the ReTTA project in East Africa, working closely with East Africa’s Director and ReTTA project leader;
  1. Collaborates and maintain strong internal relationships with TRAFFIC regional teams in Africa and globally, ensuring all actions are synergistic, complementary and demonstrate value for money; and,
  1. Supervises interns and consultants, as required.

Minimum Work Requirements:
  • Essential: Masters or Ph.D. from a recognized university, specializing in the environmental sciences (zoology, forest sciences, fisheries, or ecology);
  • Essential: At least 6 years of research experience with an international non-governmental organization (NGO), inter-governmental organization (IGO), or research institution;
  • Essential: Willingness and ability to travel widely and frequently and to work under pressure;
  • Essential: Fluency in spoken and written English and Kiswahili;
  • Relevant and proven experience in project cycle management, i.e. coordinating larger projects, incl. overseeing consultants and managing project budgets and reporting.
  • Strong analytical skills, and an ability to articulate complex issues clearly;
  • Strong networking skills and communication skills and ability to work in different cultural contexts;
  • Familiarity with standard word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software, and with electronic communication technology; and
  • Familiarity with TRAFFIC.
